Loving Frank A Novel

Loving Frank A Novel

Amazon Significant Seven, August 2007: It’s a rare treasure to find a historically imagined novel that is at once fully versed in the facts and unafraid of weaving those truths into a story that dares to explore the unanswered questions. Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney’s love story is–as many early reviews of Loving Frank have noted–little-known and often dismissed as scandal. In Nancy Horan’s skillful hands, however, what you get is two fully realized people, entirely, irrepressibly, in love. Together, Frank and Mamah are a wholly modern portrait, and while you can easily imagine them in the here and now, it’s their presence in the world of early 20th century America that shades how authentic and, ultimately, tragic their story is. Mamah’s bright, earnest spirit is particularly tender in the context of her time and place, which afforded her little opportunity to realize the intellectual life for which she yearned. Loving Frank is a remarkable literary achievement, tenderly acute and even-handed in even the most heartbreaking moments, and an auspicious debut from a writer to watch. –Anne Bartholomew

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star a book about self-absorbed, selfish people
I am very surprised by all the positive reviews. I found neither of the main characters the least bit sympathetic or interesting. They were self-absorbed and selfish people. Frank and Mamah not only deserted their children but Mamah used people. She left her children with a friend who was in ill health and had just given birth, then relied on her husband and sister to raise her children.

1 Star Could not finish it. BORING!
Well I tried to get into this book but in my opinion it was boring and sometimes difficult to understand. I had to keep going back and rereading paragraphs to understand which character had said what. Maybe it was because the book was so boring to me that I could not concentrate on it. I generally love to read romance/fiction/drama but this book was not for me. I finally stopped reading at page 147 and decided to sell it on ebay.

5 Stars Loved, Loving Frank
This book held my attention from Page 1… It was written so well, I got mad, I cryed, I laughed. This book had all kinds of emotion. I did not realize what a selfish man Frank was, yet he was a genious. I must admit I was not prepared for the ending. I was shocked to learn that this had actually happened.

We read this as a book club (The Boadacious Babes of Jacksonville), and the discussion was very interesting, but everyone agreed it was a very good read and worth the time spent reading it. Everyone had a little different opinion as to what she should have done about her affair with Frank, Like leaving her children and in some ways being verbally abused by him. But it was very apparent they did love each other.

For people interested in learning more about famous people this is a “Must Read.”

5 Stars Moving and tragic story.
This book started out a bit on the dry side. Halfway through, I was hooked. By the end of the book, I was crying. Nancy Horan weaves quite a tale that will hook you when you least expect it. The affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney was doomed almost from the beginning. After years of personal and professional struggle for both of them, they finally start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, that is never to be. Be advised, this is a book with a depressing ending, but I am so glad I read it.

4 Stars Wonderful book
This is a very thought provoking book with regard to the role of women in society. Although slow at times, the plot picks up in a surprising way. If you buy this book DO NOT google anything about it!
